Suburbiatown, Jersey, USA

What to expect in... Suburbiatown, New Jersey

17. Awareness that Delaware exists
People in the south go to lil' Delaware to go shopping (no sales tax.)
Jersey taxes are very high to pay for all sorts of stuff people don't know about (Trenton isn't known for its transparency.)

16. Shrinking middle class
The gap between rich and poor is the widest in the country. The rich communities have some of the best schools in the nation.

15. People pump your gas for you
There's a lot of rules in this state, and this is one of them. Indians often run the gas stations for some reason.

14. Retiring to Florida
It's Jersey's vacation spot and retirement home.

13. Impatient drivers
They weave in and out of traffic and if you're in the way, you might get a sighting of the Jersey state bird.

12. Hoagies
Hoagies (AKA subs) can't be beat. Hint - the roll HAS to be done right.

11. Democrats and unions
They run the show. Except that crazy Republican governor who curses people out.

10. Tolls
The cost of living is high. Even driving on the highway costs you money.

9. Wawa
You'll never go to 7-11 again. Wawa has great food and lots of coffee. For the authentic experience, you must buy TastyKakes, soft pretzels, Peanut Chews, a steamer, and of course, a hoagie.

8. Italians and Jews
Many Jerseyans have Italian ancestry and they're proud of it.
A big thank you to Italians for the delicious food (and water ice!)
Also, some towns have large Jewish populations, which are typically more affluent.

7. Population density
Per capita, Jersey has the densest population of any state, with most of the people crowded near Philly and New York.

6. The unexpected
Most people only get to see the ugly parts of Jersey (usually near New York or Philly.) A lot of the state is actually really pretty.

5. Diners and pizzerias
Jersey is the king of diners. There's fewer chains and more local joints than in other states. The pizzas are delicious.

4. Diversity
There's every walk of life in Jersey and it really enriches the culture. It's a huge melting pot, with demographics varying greatly between cities.

3. Jersey Girls
You can't push them around.
Also, beware of makeup and hair (FYI Snooki isn't really from Jersey and she's not even Italian.)

2. The shore
Hanging out at the boardwalk is the thing to do in the summer. To go on the sand, you'll most likely have to pay money.

1. Keepin it real
There's no beating around the bush.
