Salt Lake City, UT, USA

What to expect in... Salt Lake City

20. International cuisine
Utahans love to eat international food, so there's a lot of good international restaurants.
It's probably because so many people serve LDS missions in foreign countries.
The picture's just a joke.

19. Fry Sauce
It's mayonnaise mixed with ketchup. It's aight.

18. Closed shops
Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and dull. So is Utah.

17. Nice public transit
Way to go, America! A non-ghetto transit system! Salt Lake City invests a lot into public transportation in order to clean the air up (inversions are to blame for bad winter air.)

16. Right Right Left Left
The actual city is liberal for Utah, but it's surrounded by Glenn Beck worshippers.

15. The grid
The original city plans called for an easily-navigable grid system with really wide streets.

14. The Costco Life
People need big shopping carts (and big kitchens, big houses, and big SUVs) to feed Mom, Dad, Brigham, Joseph, McKay, Rebecca, Thomas, Gordon, Spencer, Nephi, and baby Sariah.
Many people get married at a young age and start having kids immediately.

13. Low crime
Members of the LDS church are generally law-abiding citizens. Since there's a good amount of Mormons here, it's safer than most American cities.

12. Lack of coffee, tea, alcohol, cigarettes
However, this is changing quickly as Mormons become the minority.

11. "Silicon Slopes"
Salt Lake City/Utah is one of the fastest-growing economies in the country, driven mostly by the tech and finance industries. The construction boom is also drawing in large numbers of Mexican immigrants.

10. Polynesians
Utah's black people.
It seems pretty random, but Mormonism is huge in the Pacific.
White Utah likes to copy Polynesian traditions like the luau, ukulele, and haka.

9. Basketball
People here don't just sit on their couch and watch sports on TV - they actually play. It's shocking how athletic people are and how many people play basketball.

8. Going to national and state parks
Utah is one big playground with 5 national parks.

7. Service
The LDS church is the world's most effective service organization. People donate a lot of money, time, and resources to the poor and needy around the world. Members of Mormon congregations also look out for each other constantly (but watch out they be all up in your business.)

6. Family friendliness
Family relationships are at the core of the LDS religion, leading Utah to become the most family-friendly place in the world (minus the hipsters.)

5. Hipsters
There's a lot of hipsters and wannabe hipsters, especially in the Sugar House area. Annoying, but at least it brings in good music and cool places to eat.

4. Increasing diversity
The LDS church recently jumped Utah a few decades forward by starting to celebrate diversity of backgrounds and perspectives. Major cultural changes are underway, as represented by the "I'm a Mormon" campaign.
Fun fact - Utah just made history by sending the first female African-American Republican to Congress.

3. A perfect world begins and ends with us!
Never seen a culture where people are so obsessed with their public image (however, Salt Lake City is a lot less cookie cutter than the rest of Utah.) Be very afraid.

2. Skiing and outdoor sports
Utahans love outdoor sports and are generally pretty healthy.
Salt Lake's climate creates light, powdery snow, making it the "best snow on earth." Sometimes, I wish that snow would stop.
After Winter, there's always a 5k going on somewhere.

1. Mormons and anti-Mormons
Salt Lake City is the center of the Mormon counter-culture. People try to be as bad as they can be to prove they're not Mormon. While Mormons celebrate Pioneer day, non-Mormons celebrate Pie and Beer day.
