Manila, Philippines

What to expect in... Manila

14. These things
You'll see whole families piled on.

13. Palm trees
The whole country has a tropical climate, and it gets hot!

12. Overpaying the taxi drivers
The taxi drivers usually take the scenic route to your destination.

11. Korean telenovelas
Don't know why.

10. Traffic
It can eat up your day. Also be careful cuz they don't follow the rules.

9. Less extreme poverty
After many years of stagnant growth, the economy is finally taking off. Currently, it's one of the fastest growing economies in the world.

8. Rice, rice, and rice
The three most common terms for food include the word rice.

7. Crime
The crime rate is very high. Carry as little cash as possible.

6. Catholicism
Catholicism isn't big in the rest of Asia, but it is here.
The Catholic leaders have a lot of political influence.

5. Memories of revolution
Manila's recent history is full of uprisings and massive protests against government corruption. Things have cooled down for now though.

4. Islands
This is a country of islands. Most tourists come to visit them (and not the cities.) Palawan is a popular one.

3. Jeepneys
These are old military vehicles from the U.S military that were turned into public transportation. You just hop right in the back and have a fun ride.
Fun fact - if you're a white guy, they may call you Joe (for GI Joe.)

2. Natural disasters
Hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes... this country has it all. It's tough living on the Ring of Fire.

1. Spanish influence
The Spanish colonized the Philippines and had a huge impact on the culture. It feels similar to Latin America. You can even hear a number of Spanish words in Tagalog.
